Military Family Resources

As a member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, Florida recognizes the need to provide supports to students of military families. Today’s military children and families experience unique hardships. They move frequently and must adjust to new living environments, schools and peer groups much more than their civilian counterparts. They live through repeated cycles of separation and reunion.

The compact rules are designed to:

  • Facilitate the transfer of education records and enrollment
  • Promote smooth transitions to graduation
  • Promote seamless transitions for course and educational placements
  • Consider circumstances for excused absences
  • Facilitate eligibility for enrollment in school and extracurricular participation

Supporting Military Families’ Transition into Florida’s Educational System

Pursuant to section (s.) 1003.05, Florida Statutes (F.S.), the Florida Department of Education has developed a required training module to support the timely transfer of K–12 education records for students entering from out-of-state schools, particularly military-connected students.

District school boards must provide this training to public and charter school employees who work directly with military students and families.

Access the training materials here:

Advanced Enrollment

Pursuant to s. 1003.05, F.S., a student whose parent is transferred or is pending transfer to a military installation within the state while on active military duty pursuant to an official military order shall be considered a resident of the school district for purposes of enrollment when the order is submitted to the school district and shall be provided preferential treatment in the controlled open enrollment process of the school district pursuant to s. 1002.31, F.S.
