Governor Rick Scott Recognizes Six Educators with the Governor’s Shine Award
Tallahassee, Fla., - Today, during a meeting of Florida’s Cabinet, Governor Rick Scott recognized six outstanding educators with the Governor’s Shine Award. The Shine Award is presented to teachers and administrators in Florida who make significant contributions to the field of education.
Governor Rick Scott said, “I am proud to present these outstanding educators with the Governor’s Shine Award today and thank them for their commitment to ensuring Florida’s students reach their full potential. I am honored to present six Shine Awards today.”
The following educators were presented with the Governor’s Shine Award:
Eleanna Hurst, Broward County – Eleanna Hurst is an accomplished educator with 14 years’ experience at Collins Elementary School where she is the Literacy Coach. She is a member of the Florida Teacher LEAD Network, was named the Legacy South Florida Magazine Top Black Educator in 2017, and is the 2017-18 Broward County Schools District Teacher of the Year.
Maria Torres-Crosby, Hillsborough County – Maria is a veteran teacher with 21 years’ experience at Memorial Middle School where she teaches sixth grade English Language Arts. She is the 2017-18 Hillsborough County Schools District Teacher of the Year and a National Board certified educator.
Samantha Hopper, Monroe County – Samantha Hopper teaches fourth grade at Key Largo School, and has eight years’ experience as an educator. She is the recipient of the 2017 Mary J. Brogan Excellence in Teaching Award and is the 2017-18 Monroe County Schools District Teacher of the Year.
William “BJ” Ivey, Sarasota County – William “BJ” Ivey has been teaching for 13 years at Riverview High School, where he teaches Advanced Placement Psychology and Drop Out Prevention Social Studies. He is the 2017-18 Sarasota County Schools District Teacher of the Year.
Dana Kelly, St. Johns County – Dana Kelly has been teaching for 14 years, the last eight of which at Cunningham Creek Elementary School, where she teaches first grade. She is a member of the Florida Teacher LEAD Netwwork and is the 2017-18 St. Johns County District Teacher of the Year.
Kathleen Redfern, Walton County – Kathleen Redfern has seven years’ experience as an educator and teaches kindergarten, second and third grades at Mossy Head Elementary. She is the 2018 Air Force Association Chapter 398 Elementary Teacher of the Year, 2018 Air Force Association Chapter 398 Overall Teacher of the Year, and the 2017-18 Walton County Schools District Teacher of the Year.
